Herewith, what we’ve been reading this week:
We all got pretty excited about the Powerball before the media ruined our dreams of billions/ millions/ the $23.75 our 20 person pool actually won. However, some of the math was pretty fascinating. Wired published a piece that reminded all of us that the odds are real and that 1-in-292 million is a very very small percentage chance. So small in fact that that the New York Times, in its gently titled “You Will Not Win the Powerball Jackpot,” let us know we were more likely to be hit by lightening, twice, than to win the billions/ hundreds of millions. We all became familiar with the idea of “annuity.” I also might or might not have played with the LA Times’ simulator and came to the tough realization that I might not win. Or. I might! My hopes were not dashed! Our office bought the tickets anyway and won our aforementioned $23.75 (thats in total, not per person).
B2B marketers will be upping their content game in 2016, says a new survey done by the Content Marketing Institute along with Marketing Profs. According to their work, 76% of marketers expect to create more content marketing next year and will look for higher conversion and lead generation to drive success metrics. 50% of respondents said they would spend more on content marketing this year, signaling a change in traditional marketing budgets in 2016.
This week brings on a new easily formed habit: keeping an eye on New York Magazine’s “Latest News” feed along the lefthand side of their homepage. A quick glance gives you the day’s headlines but someone over there tells some pretty good jokes when you look at the fine print. “Consolation baby water bottles were handed out” made my whole day better.

What is a food stylist? I think pretty hard about the photo content for our posts (and probably not nearly as hard as our publishers!) but admittedly had never thought to touch a strawberry up with lipstick or use hair cream to get the perfect cereal shot. And all those turkeys we see in beautiful photos around the holidays? Never even cooked, says the Guardian in their myth-debunking piece on food photography. Food stylists arrive to a shoot with a bevy to tools, props, lookalikes and apparently, mashed potatoes for filler. Who knew?
Zulily (the women’s discount site that has been loved by its customers and recently acquired by Liberty Media for over $2B) is enjoying a moment of very positive customer sentiment after a customer service agent refunded someone for a jacket and then asked her to donate the coat to someone in need instead of returning it. The customer, who said the call brought her to tears, posted about it and has gotten almost 100,000 likes so far.
What are the biggest mistakes you can make during interviews or meetings? FastCo put together a list to explore what our body language, speech and other habits really mean to prospective employers. This year at VigLink we are offering speaking courses which should also be illuminating for a lot of us as we pick up on few of these ticks. Also from this article: the weird things interviewees have done in interviews which included “Candidate took a family photo off of interviewer’s desk and put it into her purse.” Can’t make this stuff up.
Lastly, I found myself not so much reading, but dying laughing while watching Snoop’s Plizzanet Earth. “WHAT IS DEEZE ANIMALS?”
No really, that’s what he says. He’s a natural.
